It's Indy Day! The Indy 500...

It's Indy Day or the day of the Indianapolis 500 Race. Here in Illi-ana, it's part of our Memorial Day Weekend Festivities. Hubby and I had the opportunity to go for many years to watch the Race in person with our good friends in Texas. They would fly or drive up every year and we would make the 3 hour trek over to the Brickyard, the morning of the Race and get home exhausted but content that we once again got to experience the whole thing together.

Those days are over now, but we've kept the tradition of watching all of the pre-race activites, the race itself and post-highlights, while wearing our Indy Regalia, putting out our checkered flags and cooking up some barbeque on the grill. (Yeah, we're spoiled...we have a TV out here on our covered deck!) I'll never forget all the times we experienced it over there first hand, but its just pretty comfortable sitting here in the comfort of my own home watching it on the TV. Ok... gotsta go. Lap 36 is coming up!

Saturday Surprise ~ Party Sandwich Loaf

Found this recipe over at Expolounge and it actually appealed to me. We're planning a Summer Party with a "Carnival" theme, so with the pastel colored "frosting" I just may just make it for that night. The shrimp salad, chicken with bacon and pecan fillings sounded cool and refreshing...yummo!

Here's the directions:

Party Sandwich Loaf

Prepare fillings (below). Trim crusts from 1 loaf unsliced sandwich bread. Cut loaf horizontally into 4 equal slices. Spread one side of 3 slices with softened butter. Place 1 bread slice, buttered side up, on serving plate. Spread evenly with Shrimp Salad Filling. Top with second bread slice and spread evenly with Cheese-Pecan Filling. Top with third slice and spread evenly with Chicken-Bacon Filling. Top with remaining bread slice. Frost top and sides with Cream Cheese Frosting (below). Chill until frosting has set, about 30 minutes. Wrap loaf with a damp cloth and continue to chill 2-1/2 hours, or overnight. 12 to 14 servings.

Shrimp Salad Filling
• 1 hard-cooked egg, finely chopped
• 1 can (4-1/2 oz.) broken shrimp, rinsed and drained
• 2 tbsp. finely chopped celery
• 1 tbsp. lemon juice
• 1/8 tsp. salt
• Dash pepper
• 3 tbsp. mayonnaise

Mix all ingredients.

Cheese-Pecan Filling
• 1 pkg. (3 oz.) cream cheese, softened
• 1 cup finely chopped toasted pecans
• 1 can (8-3/4 oz.) crushed pineapple, well drained

Mix all ingredients.

Chicken-Bacon Filling
• 8 slices bacon, crisply fried and crumbled
• 1 cup finely chopped cooked chicken
• 1/4 cup mayonnaise
• 1 tbsp. finely chopped pimiento
• 1/4 tsp. salt
• 1/8 tsp. pepper

Mix all ingredients.

Cream Cheese Frosting
• 2 pkg. (8 oz. each) cream cheese, softened
• 1/2 cup light cream
• Green food coloring

Mix cheese and cream thoroughly. Add a few drops food coloring to tint frosting a delicate green.

Freaky Fridays

Hello Bloglanders,
Sorry for not posting in the last a few days! I've had the coughing crud and been a little under the weather. (In more ways than one, our weather here in the Midwest has been CRAPPY!) Now for Freaky Fridays...

Ran across this link which talks about Celebrity Favorite Sunglasses for Under $100. WTH? These aren't prescription sunglasses? They're just plain ol' cheap plastic sunglasses that look the same as what I buy... at the Dollar Store or WalMart. I just don't get it. I could buy some cheapos and glue a monogram on them or dress them up with a bit of "bling" and spend under $10 total. Money to burn, I guess. I just prefer to make people wonder "who's behind those Foster Grants?" and laugh all the way to the bank!

The Banger Sisters

Just finished watching the "Banger Sisters" (again) on a premium channel and it was just as great as the first time I watched it. It reminds me of the freedom you feel when you are reunited with an old friend who shared so many good times and silly adventures of youth. Now, don't get the wrong idea... I don't have a secret box filled with pictures of Rock Cocks or smoke 20 years old joints, its that the era those gals experienced together was the same as mine. Great music, great story line. I'm so glad I came of age in the '70's!

Retro 1950's Cocktail Party

I LOVE theme parties! What could be better than a 1950's style cocktail party? With this type of party, no main meal is served, just finger foods and cocktails. Of course, no 50's cocktail party would be complete without some swinging dance music from the era. too!

Here are a few retro recipes I found for cocktails and hors dourves:

Stinger

Fill shaker 1/3 full shaved ice
1 jigger Brandy
1 jigger Creme De Menthe, White
Shake well.
Serve in No. 9 or 10 glass

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Old Fashioned Cocktail
Prepare and serve in Glass No. 5
1 lump cube sugar
1 or 2 dashes Cocktail Bitters
1 dash seltzer
Muddle sugar until dissolved
1 jogger Rye, Bourbon or Scotch Whiskey
Cube of ice
Garnish with twist of lemon peel, 1 slice of orange, 1 maraschino cherry. Serve with highball spoon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BACONETTES
Spread slices of uncooked bacon with peanut butter, Roll tight, fastening with toothpick. Toast under broiler flame until bacon is done. Serve by sticking toothpicks around larger apple.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Of course, don't forget the mood music...gotta have a little boss nova and some twisting songs!!! Be a hip cat and dress for the occasion, too! A little black dress, simple pearl necklace and some stillettos would be most appropriate. Man, I can't wait to throw one of these bashes soon!
Monkey Business
As I am a teacher, my Summer Break starts on Wednesday. (Yaaaaayyy) My first "project" for the Summer is to make my 3 month old grandson, Baby H, a couple of rompers with matching trimmed onsies. I have the first one cut out and ready to go. Here is the fabric and the pattern I'm using...
I'll post some pictures when this one is finished. Happy Sunday!
Saturday Surprise- Vintage Jello Mold Recipe
With the hot summer months approaching, I thought I'd post a "blast-from-the-past" vintage recipe from the '50's. Heaven only knows why these "aspic" recipes were so popular???? Maybe it was because Jello started coming out in flavors or something?
Personally, I have never eaten or made one of these concoctions. They always looked like something I wouldn't like 'cause I'm weirded out by meat and vegetables that wiggle with a fruit flavoring. Here is the recipe and if anyone ever tries it, please let me know how it turned out. Bon Apetit!
Happy Birthday Cher!
Always one of my favorite performers, Cher is 65 today! I know she's had many plastic surgeries, but she's lookin' good and still a headliner! May the beat go on for you, Cher, for many years to come!
Freaky Fridays ~ Chatty Cathy Revisited
When I was a little girl, one of my favorite dolls was my Chatty Cathy Doll. Mine looked just like the one on the left. I loved her little pink and white striped dress and white pinafore! I played with her until she absolutley fell apart. Humm, maybe I should have kept her head and Gothed her out?
Below is the work of artist D. L. Marian. An eerie resemblance to my Chatty Cathy, don't ya think? The artist's work averages around $265. Personally, I find it disturbing and can't imagine why anyone would want to own such a monstrosity. Its just plain "f-ugly"...
Coffee- Cafe A'Lotte??
I like coffee. If I don't get my two cups of it in the morning, I'm grouchy, have a headache and just plain don't feel right! Now I'm not one of those gourmet coffee people; just give me some of that "the best part of waking up" Folger's in my cup and I'm just fine. However, I saw this funny advertisement for a super deluxe Cafe Latte that sounded very interesting.... I think the only problem is I might have to go to Holland or one of those Scandinavian Countries to try one. (Legally, that is!) Its too cold over there and besides, I don't have the money to go. Guess I'll just stick with my Folger's, instead. The guy in the ad sure looks perky and happy, though.
Big Butts
If you have a big butt, don't you already know its big? Like, haven't you ever looked into a mirror at your rear end? Why ask someone if a certain outfit makes your butt look big? Maybe you should ask, "Does this outfit make my butt look BIGGER?" But anyway, I saw this magnet on the internet and it cracks me up! I loved it so much I made a button to wear that has the caption on it. (I wore it to a Party one time, not "out" in everyday!)
Greetings Bloglanders!
So exciting, the first post on a brand-spankin'-new blog! I hope you all will eventually find something you like. There should be anything here from vintage recipes to wacked out pictures and some just plain funny stuff, too. Hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I will writing it.
